It takes longer than picking a pre-built template, but it's the right route when your layout doesn't fit any of Wix's presets. 01Start a new site and pick the blank option
Every Wix site you own lives on the Sites dashboard, reachable from My Sites in the top navigation. Click Create New Site to start fresh.
Wix now usually asks what the site is for first and offers an AI-assisted setup that generates a starting layout from a short description; if you want a truly empty canvas, skip that chat and go to the template gallery instead, where Blank Template is still a listed option alongside the themed designs. Picking it drops you into the editor with nothing on the page.
02Open the editor and add your first section
With a blank page open in the editor, click Add Section. Wix doesn't leave you positioning individual elements from zero: the panel organizes pre-structured layouts by purpose, including Welcome, About, Team, and Contact, so you're choosing a structural starting point for each part of the page. Picking one of these still counts as building from scratch, since the page itself started empty.
03Drop the section onto the canvas and edit the content
Once you pick a layout, it lands on the page with placeholder text and imagery in place: a heading like "Welcome," a short description, and a background image. Double-click any text box to edit it directly. The Add Section button stays visible below your last section so you can keep stacking new ones as the page grows downward.
04Add and build out additional pages
A single Home page rarely covers a real site, so open Pages & Menu in the left sidebar to add more. From there, click Add Page: Wix offers page templates sorted by purpose (About, Services, Contact, and others), or you can click +Blank Page at the top to skip them and start that page empty too.
A new page is added to your site menu automatically, and you build it the same way you built Home, one section at a time, with content suited to that page's purpose. Keeping spacing and typography consistent between pages is what makes a hand-built site read as intentional instead of assembled piecemeal.
05Check mobile view before publishing
Toggle the mobile view icon near the top of the editor to see how sections reflow on a phone-sized screen. A layout built section by section doesn't inherit the tested responsive behavior of a pre-made template, so review every page in mobile view specifically. Text that looks fine on desktop can crowd or overlap once the viewport narrows, and this is the fastest way to catch that before visitors do.
06Preview and publish
Click Preview to interact with the site as a visitor would, checking that navigation links move between pages correctly and that nothing looks unfinished. When it holds up, click Publish. You can always jump back into the editor from the Sites dashboard to keep adding pages or sections later.
When it doesn't work
A new page opens with a layout you didn't ask for
Why: Add Page in Pages & Menu defaults to a gallery of pre-built page templates sorted by category.
Fix: Click +Blank Page at the top of that gallery to skip the templates and start the page empty, the same way you started Home.
Pages look inconsistent once you've built a few of them
Why: Building every page independently, section by section, makes it easy for fonts, colors, and spacing to drift from page to page.
Fix: Reuse the same section categories where the content is similar, and check your site's theme settings (fonts and colors) rather than styling each new text box from scratch.
The site looks fine on desktop but broken on mobile
Why: A hand-built layout has no template to inherit tested responsive behavior from, so overlapping text and crowded sections only show up once the viewport narrows.
Fix: Toggle mobile view on every page before publishing, not just Home, and adjust spacing there directly.
