How to Remove Domain Forwarding Squarespace & Add, Restore DNS 2026 Easily

Log in to Squarespace and go to the Domains section of your account, then select the domain you want to change. The overview page shows its status and, if forwarding is active, a line right under the domain name confirming where it currently forwards to and which provider is handling it. That confirmation is worth checking first — it tells you the rule is live and gives you the exact destination URL, which is useful to have on hand in case you want to reference it later or set the same forward up again elsewhere.

From the domain's side menu, click Website to reach the connection and forwarding settings. Scroll down and you'll find a Domain Forwarding section listing every rule currently set up for that domain, each with its source, destination, redirect type, and forward-path setting laid out in a row.

Next to each rule are two small icons — a pencil to edit it and a trash can to delete it. This is the same panel you'd use to add a new rule, so it's worth a glance at the whole list before deleting anything, in case there's more than one rule and you only want to remove one of them.

Click the trash icon next to the rule you want to remove and confirm the deletion when Squarespace asks you to. The rule disappears from the list immediately, and the panel switches to a "No domain forwarding" message with a prompt to add a rule if you ever need one again. At this point the domain still resolves however its underlying DNS records say to — forwarding was just a layer on top of that, so removing it doesn't touch the DNS records themselves.

If setting up forwarding earlier meant removing or changing your original DNS records, deleting the rule won't put those back automatically — you need to re-add them yourself. Go to the domain's DNS section and add an A record for @ pointing to 198.185.159.144, plus a CNAME record for www pointing to ext-cust.squarespace.com, which is Squarespace's standard default setup for a domain connected to one of its own sites. If your domain was pointed at something other than a Squarespace site before forwarding, use whatever records that host originally gave you instead.

DNS changes aren't instant everywhere at once — expect the update to show up within a few minutes in most places, but allow up to 24 hours for it to fully propagate across every network. If you check right away and still see the old forwarding destination, that's almost always a caching issue rather than a sign something went wrong. Clear your browser cache, try an incognito window, or check from a different network like your phone's mobile data — any of those will usually show you the corrected result while the rest of the internet catches up.
