Searching for a way to add Square as a payment option on a Squarespace store usually ends at the same wall: Settings → Selling → Payments simply doesn't list it. That's not a bug or a hidden toggle.
Squarespace Commerce supports only three processors for online checkout — Squarespace Payments, Stripe, and PayPal — and Square isn't one of them. This guide shows that Payments screen so you can see the real options, then covers the one place Square does connect to Squarespace: Point of Sale, for in-person sales.
Before you start
- A Squarespace Commerce plan — Point of Sale and payment processing aren't available on Squarespace's non-Commerce plans
- For in-person Square payments specifically: an existing Square account and a supported Square Reader
01Log into your Squarespace account
Head to the Squarespace login screen and sign in with your email and password, or use one of the Continue with Google, Apple, or Facebook options if that's how your account was originally set up. Once you're in, Squarespace takes you to your dashboard, where you'll pick the specific site you want to work with if you manage more than one.
02Open your site dashboard and find Settings
From your site's home panel, which shows a Get started checklist, your site preview, and links like Manage Domain and Publish Your Site, look at the left-hand navigation. Website, Products & Services, Scheduling, and Invoicing all sit here, but the setting you need is reached through the gear icon at the bottom of the sidebar, labeled Settings.
03Open Selling, then Payments, and see what's actually listed
Inside Settings, the left column lists categories including Website, Domains & Email, Customer Notifications, Selling, Brand, Marketing, Third Party Tools, and Billing. Click Selling, then Payments.
This is where every online checkout processor gets connected, and according to Squarespace's own support documentation, that list holds exactly three names: Squarespace Payments, Stripe, and PayPal. Square isn't among them and never has been; Squarespace Commerce doesn't support it for online checkout.
04For Square specifically, that's Point of Sale, not this page
Square connects to Squarespace through a separate feature: Point of Sale, built into the Squarespace app for taking in-person payments. There, you can choose Squarespace Payments, Stripe, or Square as the processor for a physical sale, and inventory syncs back to your online store automatically.
It needs a supported Square Reader connected to the app; Squarespace explicitly doesn't support the Square Register, Stand, or Terminal. Point of Sale itself works in the US and UK, but the Square Reader hardware Squarespace sells ships only to US merchants, so UK sellers would pair Point of Sale with a different processor.
05If online checkout was the actual goal, connect Stripe or PayPal instead
Back on the Payments page from step three, click Connect beneath Stripe or PayPal (or set up Squarespace Payments, where available) and follow the prompts to authorize that account. Once connected, it shows up as an active method on the Payments settings page.
Visit your storefront's checkout and either place a small test order or confirm the processor appears as a selectable option, before announcing the change anywhere. Payment settings are exactly the kind of setting where a small misconfiguration only becomes obvious the moment a real customer tries to check out.
When it doesn't work
Square doesn't appear when I open Settings → Selling → Payments
Why: Square was never supported as an online checkout processor. That list only ever shows Squarespace Payments, Stripe, and PayPal.
Fix: Pick one of those three for website checkout. If Square specifically matters, use it through Point of Sale in the Squarespace app for in-person sales instead.
The Square Reader won't pair inside the Squarespace app
Why: Only the Square Reader itself is supported, not Square's Register, Stand, or Terminal hardware, and Squarespace sells the reader only to US merchants.
Fix: Confirm you're using a genuine Square Reader. Outside the US, pair Point of Sale with a different supported processor instead.
Point of Sale doesn't show up in my account at all
Why: It requires a Commerce plan, and per Squarespace's own documentation, it's limited to businesses in the US and UK.
Fix: Check your current plan under Settings → Billing, and confirm your business is registered in a supported country.
