How to Use Components in Jira
By Impran M N
Components let you tag issues by the part of the product they belong to, such as billing, frontend, or infrastructure, making it easier to filter and assign ownership. This guide covers setting up and using components in a project.
01Open project settings
Go to the project's settings and find the Components section.
02Create your components
Add components that match the meaningful areas of your product or team structure.
03Assign a default lead per component
Set a lead for each component so issues can be auto-assigned to the right person when a component is chosen.
04Apply components to issues
When creating or editing an issue, select the relevant component from the field on the issue form.
05Filter and report by component
Use components in searches, boards, or dashboards to see work broken down by area.
Frequently asked questions
Can an issue have more than one component?
Yes, Jira allows multiple components to be selected on a single issue if it spans more than one area.
Do components automatically assign issues?
If a component has a default assignee configured, new issues with that component can inherit that assignee automatically.
What's the difference between components and labels?
Components are a structured, admin-managed field tied to the project, while labels are freeform tags anyone can create on the fly.
Can I rename a component after issues are already using it?
Yes, renaming a component updates its name across all issues currently using it without breaking the association.
