How to Export Jira Backlog, Issues, and Tickets to Excel
By Impran M N
The backlog can grow into hundreds of issues, and sometimes the easiest way to review it all is outside Jira in a spreadsheet. This guide covers exporting your backlog issues and tickets to Excel in one pass.
01Open your backlog view
Navigate to the project's backlog to see the full list of unscheduled issues and tickets.
02Filter to the exact scope you need
Use search filters to narrow the backlog to a specific status, label, or date range before exporting.
03Access the export option
From the issue search or filter results screen, find the export function near the top of the list.
04Select Excel as the format
Choose the Excel or CSV export type rather than PDF or Word.
05Review the downloaded spreadsheet
Open the file to confirm all backlog issues and tickets exported with the fields you expected.
Frequently asked questions
Does exporting the backlog include subtasks?
Subtasks are included if they match your search filter; otherwise they may need a separate export.
Can I export tickets from multiple projects at once?
Yes, as long as your search filter spans multiple projects, the export will include all matching issues.
Will sprint-assigned issues be excluded from a backlog export?
It depends on your filter; a backlog-specific filter usually excludes issues already committed to an active sprint.
Is there a faster way to export very large backlogs?
For very large exports, using the Jira REST API is often faster and more reliable than the manual export button.
