How to Edit Labels in Jira
By Impran M N
Labels are meant to make issues easy to filter and group, but they lose that value fast once typos and inconsistent naming pile up. This guide covers how to edit labels on individual issues and clean them up more broadly.
01Open the issue with the label
Go to the issue whose labels you want to change and find the Labels field.
02Remove or add labels directly
Click into the field to remove an incorrect label or add a new one, then save the change.
03Search for all issues using a label
Use Jira's search with a label filter to find every issue currently tagged with a specific label.
04Bulk edit to rename a label
Select the matching issues and use the bulk change feature to remove the old label and apply a corrected one across all of them.
05Confirm the cleanup
Search again for the old label to make sure no issues were missed during the bulk update.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rename a label everywhere at once?
Jira doesn't offer a single rename button, so the common approach is bulk editing issues to replace the old label with a new one.
Who can create or edit labels in Jira?
Any user who can edit an issue can typically add or remove labels, since labels aren't restricted like some admin-controlled fields.
Do labels affect workflow or permissions?
Not by default, though some automation rules or permission schemes can be configured to react to specific labels.
What's the difference between labels and components?
Labels are freeform tags anyone can create, while components are a structured field predefined by project administrators.
