How to Add Status to a Jira Column

By Impran M N

Each column on a Jira board is really just a bucket for one or more statuses. If a status isn't mapped to a column, its issues won't show up where you expect. This guide covers how to add a status to a board column correctly.

01Open board settings

Go to your board and open the settings area where columns are configured.

02Go to the columns tab

Find the Columns section, which lists your current columns and the statuses mapped to each.

03Add the status to a column

Drag the unmapped status into the column where you want it to appear, or add a new column for it.

04Reorder columns if needed

Adjust the column order so the workflow reads left to right in the sequence your team actually follows.

05Save and verify on the board

Return to the board and confirm issues with that status now appear in the correct column.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why is a status missing from my board entirely?

If a status hasn't been mapped to any column yet, Jira usually flags it in the columns settings so you can assign it.

Can multiple statuses share one column?

Yes, a single column can represent several statuses grouped together, such as combining 'In Review' and 'In QA'.

Does changing column mapping affect the underlying workflow?

No, column mapping only changes how statuses are displayed on the board, not the workflow's actual transitions.

Will existing issues move automatically after remapping?

Yes, once a status is mapped to a new column, any issue with that status will appear there immediately.
