How to Add or Create a Subtask in Jira
By Impran M N
When a single Jira issue covers more ground than one person can handle at once, breaking it into subtasks keeps the work organized. This guide covers how to create subtasks under an existing issue and manage them going forward.
01Open the parent issue
Navigate to the story or task you want to break down and open its detail view.
02Find the subtasks section
Scroll to the subtasks area of the issue, which lists any subtasks already attached.
03Add a new subtask
Click the option to create a subtask and give it a clear, specific summary describing the smaller piece of work.
04Assign and estimate the subtask
Set an assignee and, if your team tracks it, an estimate so the subtask can be planned like any other issue.
05Track subtask progress
Update each subtask's status as work progresses; the parent issue reflects overall progress based on its subtasks.
Frequently asked questions
Can a subtask have its own subtasks?
No, Jira only supports one level of subtasks beneath a parent issue.
Do subtasks need to be closed before the parent issue?
Typically yes, most teams close all subtasks before marking the parent issue as done.
Can I move a subtask to a different parent issue?
Yes, Jira allows you to move a subtask under a different parent if the work needs to be reorganized.
Are subtasks visible on the board by default?
It depends on your board's card layout settings; some boards nest subtasks inside the parent card instead of showing them separately.
