Instagram rebranded Vanish Mode as Disappearing Messages, which is why searching help articles and app settings for the old name leads nowhere. The idea is the same: messages in that thread are removed automatically rather than staying in your history.

The mechanics have shifted, though, and the current version can be configured to clear messages a set time after they are sent rather than only when you leave the chat, so don't assume behaviour you remember from a few years ago still applies. It is also a per-chat setting, not an account-wide one — turning it on in a conversation with one friend leaves every other thread untouched.

Disappearing Messages only exists inside a one-to-one direct message thread, so open the conversation first from the DM inbox. You cannot enable it from your profile, from Settings, or from the inbox list, and it is not available in every kind of thread — group chats and message requests behave differently. Get into the thread and make sure the keyboard is dismissed so the whole conversation is visible, because the gesture that activates the mode needs room to work.

With the thread open, put your finger near the bottom of the chat area and swipe up, continuing past the point where the messages stop moving. The screen darkens and a prompt confirms you are entering disappearing mode; release, and the thread switches.

Two visible things tell you it worked: the composer placeholder changes from Message to Disappearing message, and Instagram drops a small grey system line into the conversation stating that disappearing messages are on and when messages will clear, with a Change link beside it. Swiping up again is what turns the mode back off, and the same grey line records that too.

If the swipe does nothing at all, the app version is the first thing to rule out. Open the App Store on iPhone or Google Play on Android, search for Instagram, and look at the button on the listing — if it says Open rather than Update, you are already current.

Messaging features in particular are gated on the client build, and a phone that has auto-updates switched off can sit months behind. Update, force-close Instagram completely rather than just backgrounding it, then reopen the chat and try the gesture again.

Instagram rolls messaging changes out gradually rather than all at once, and availability varies by region and by account. Two phones running the same version number can genuinely have different features, so if a friend can use it and you cannot, that is a plausible explanation rather than a fault on your side.

There is no setting to force a rollout — the only real options are to wait, or to check whether Instagram has documented restrictions for your country. Accounts registered as under-18 also have tighter messaging rules, which can remove the option entirely.

When the feature should be there but the app is misbehaving, clear its temporary data. On Android, go to your phone's Settings, then Apps, then Instagram, then Storage, and tap Clear cache — not Clear data, which signs you out and wipes local settings. iOS has no equivalent cache button, so the closest option is offloading or reinstalling the app.

If clearing the cache doesn't help, uninstall Instagram, reinstall it from the store, and log back in. Your messages and account live on Instagram's servers, so a reinstall costs you nothing except having to sign in again — but make sure you know your password or have two-factor access before you delete the app.

Some messaging features behave differently on professional accounts than on personal ones, so if you have switched to a Business or Creator profile and the option vanished, temporarily switching back to Personal is a legitimate diagnostic. It is also worth remembering what the feature does and does not guarantee: the other person can still screenshot the conversation, and Instagram notifies you when they do, but a disappearing message is not a security control. Treat it as tidiness rather than privacy, and don't send anything through it you would not want kept.
