How to Create an Instagram Reel in Canva Easily 2026

Open the Templates panel and search "instagram reels". The results are already the vertical Reels size, and the Category, Style and Language filters above the grid help narrow them.

Each thumbnail plays a short animated preview. Judge the motion, not just the layout.

A template whose cuts feel too slow or frantic in a two-second preview will feel the same once your words are in it. Check for a Pro icon or price tag too, since those elements have to be paid for when you download.

The example here is a "Blue Modern Marketing Tips Instagram Reel". It loads with a scrubbable timeline along the bottom and a Preview button above the editor.

It runs 42 seconds: cartoon character animation, a text card reading "Feeling Lost in Marketing? Use the customer's journey map to navigate the way," and handle and website text underneath.

Play it end to end before changing anything. You'll see which parts are structure you want to keep and which lines have to become yours.

Expanding the timeline shows each text element as its own bar, so you can see when the headline, the handle (@reallygreatsite) and the website URL appear across the 42 seconds. Select a text element and type over it.

Here "Feeling Lost in Marketing?" became "Feeling Lost in Technology?" with the layout and animation timing untouched. Then hunt down the small stuff.

Templates repeat the placeholder handle and reallygreatsite.com at the bottom of several frames, and they're easy to miss because the headline draws the eye. Scrub the whole timeline and replace every instance with your real handle or link.

Scrub through once more and look for any card that holds a beat too long. Reels lose viewers quickly, so trim it.

The entrance and exit animations stay attached to each element, so shortening a section doesn't mean rebuilding it. Music is added from the Audio tab in the editor's side panel.

If you don't see that tab, open Apps first, or go to Elements and choose Audio. Clicking a track drops it in at the playhead's position on the timeline.

To remove the template's original track, right-click its coloured bar below the page thumbnails and choose Delete track, or select it and use Volume to mute it. You can also upload your own music, but Canva runs an audio fingerprint check on uploads. If a track infringes copyright, you won't be able to publish the design with that audio.

Click Share, then Download, and pick MP4 Video as the file type. On Canva Free leave Quality at the default: changing it to 480p, 720p or 4K shows an upgrade prompt.

Canva says that prompt is not a download error. Paid plans can go up to 4K on desktop.

The file keeps the Reels format, so you can post it through Instagram's own app with no resizing. To skip the download, click Share, then See all, and choose Instagram.
