Accidental offers happen, and eBay gives you two different ways to walk one back. They are not the same thing.
Deleting simply clears the offer off your list. Retracting is a formal withdrawal with a stated reason that eBay records against the listing, and it's only available within a specific window. This guide follows both paths from the same starting point, your Bids/Offers page, and adds the eligibility rules eBay applies before either one works.
01Open Bids/Offers from your account menu
On the eBay website, click your account name near the top left, where the greeting reads something like "Hi [name]!", to open the dropdown menu. Bids/Offers sits partway down the list, next to Watchlist, Purchase History, and Selling.
It's the central page for anything you've bid on or offered on, split into tabs for Bidding, Best Offers, and Didn't Win. Worth bookmarking if you're active on auction-style listings regularly.
02Find the offer in your Offers list
Under the Best Offers tab, each offer shows its status, the item, the price you offered against the seller's asking price, and a countdown to when the offer or listing expires. Every row has a checkbox on the left, and a Delete button sits above the list next to Status and Sort filters. eBay also caps how many offers you can make on one item, generally three and five for vehicles, and expired, declined, and retracted offers all count toward that limit. Checking the box and clicking Delete is the fastest way to clear an offer that's already expired or lost.
03Know what Delete really does
Checking a box and clicking Delete removes that row from your Offers list. It's housekeeping, not a formal cancellation with the seller.
It fits offers that have already expired or lost, where there's nothing left to retract. If the offer is still active and you want the seller to know it's withdrawn instead of just gone from your own list, that's a different action, covered next.
04Open the offer's details to cancel it formally
For an active offer you still want withdrawn, open its listing and use View offer details instead of deleting from the list. That takes you to the offer's own page, where the real retraction controls live. eBay only allows a formal retraction if 12 or more hours remain before the listing ends and you placed the offer less than an hour ago. Once the seller has accepted, declined, or countered it, retraction is off the table no matter how much time is left, and deleting the row on your end won't stop them from accepting it.
05Choose a reason and cancel the offer
Inside the offer's details, the retraction page is headed "Best Offer Cancellation: Choose Reason." A dropdown lists eBay's accepted reasons, options like "Entered wrong amount" cover a simple typo, and picking one is required before the Cancel Offer button processes the withdrawal. eBay records why the offer was pulled and notifies the seller it's no longer available to accept. If the seller doesn't respond within 24 hours, or the listing ends first, eBay cancels the offer automatically anyway.
When it doesn't work
Retract offer isn't available for an offer that's still active
Why: eBay only allows retraction if 12+ hours remain before the listing ends and you placed the offer under an hour ago. Once the seller accepts, declines, or counters it, the window closes regardless of time left.
Fix: Use Delete to clear the row from your own list. A formal retraction isn't possible once you're outside those conditions.
eBay won't let me submit another offer on the same item
Why: eBay caps offers at three per item, five for vehicles, and expired, declined, and retracted offers all count toward that cap.
Fix: Check your remaining attempts on the Best Offers tab before offering again, since retracting a mistaken offer still uses one up.
An offer disappeared from the list without me doing anything
Why: Sellers have 24 hours to respond to an offer. If they don't, or the listing ends first, eBay cancels the offer automatically.
Fix: Nothing to fix. Check the item's status on Bids/Offers to confirm it was cancelled and not accepted.
Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between deleting an offer and canceling it?
