A Canva greeting card starts from a template and becomes yours through three edits: the words, the colours, and usually a photo. That part is quick.
The two places people get caught are at the end: a card that looks fine on screen but trims with a white sliver at the edge, and a download that turns out to carry watermarks from premium elements. This guide walks through the design, then covers the print settings and the free-versus-paid question before you hit Download.
01Search for a card from the home screen
Sign in to Canva. The home screen shows format shortcuts such as Templates, Presentation, Social media and Print, with your recent designs below. You can browse Templates, but typing the occasion into the search bar ("birthday card", "thank you card") filters straight to relevant designs.
02Pick a template close to the layout you want
Results range from florals and doodled thank-you cards to birthday layouts with photo placeholders and minimal cards with one line of script. Scroll a few rows before choosing.
A template whose layout already fits your message saves far more time than one with the perfect colours, because colours take seconds to change and layouts do not. If you plan to stay on the free plan, check whether the template relies on premium photos or graphics before committing, since those are watermarked on free accounts. Click a thumbnail to open it in the editor.
03Replace the text and add your photos
Each text box is a separate element. Click the headline, retype it for your occasion, then work through the smaller lines underneath.
The personal message usually lives there, and leftover placeholder copy is the mistake people spot only after printing. For a photo card, open Uploads in the left panel, upload your pictures and drag one onto the template's photo placeholder; Canva fits it into the frame. The same route works for a business logo on a branded thank-you card.
04Recolour graphics, then apply the change everywhere
Select a graphic and click the colour tile on the toolbar. The Color panel opens beside the design, showing the colours already in use plus a default palette.
Pick a new shade, or use the eyedropper to sample a colour from elsewhere on the card. If no colour tiles appear, that element's colours cannot be changed.
Recolouring one element does not update matching colours elsewhere. To swap a colour across the whole card, select Current page or All pages in the Color panel after picking the new shade. With a card that has an inside and an outside, All pages is the one you want.
05Turn on bleed if you will print it
Skip this step for a card you will only send digitally. For print, open File > Settings and select Show print bleed (on some accounts it sits under File > Rulers and guides).
Dashed lines appear near the edges. Canva's bleed is fixed at 0.125 inches (3.175 mm) on each side and cannot be changed.
Stretch any background colour or image out to the bleed line so no white shows after trimming. Keep text and logos well inside the edge; Show margins and Show danger zone detection in the same menu flag anything close enough to be cut off.
06Download in the right format
Canva saves as you work, but downloading is separate. Open Share > Download.
For sending by message or email, choose PNG or JPG. For printing, choose PDF Print and tick Crop marks and bleed, which adds trim guides to the file.
Crop marks appear only in the exported PDF, never in the editor. If the card uses premium elements on a free account, the button reads Pay and Download instead of Download. That is your last chance to swap those elements for free ones.
When it doesn't work
Watermarks appear across parts of the card
Why: The template includes premium elements, which stay watermarked on a free account until purchased.
Fix: Replace those elements with free ones, pay for them at download, or click Remove watermarks on an element to buy just that one.
A thin white edge shows after the card is trimmed
Why: The background stops at the trim line instead of running into the bleed, or the PDF was exported without bleed.
Fix: Turn on Show print bleed, stretch the background past the edge, and re-download as PDF Print with Crop marks and bleed ticked.
A recoloured shade still shows the old colour elsewhere on the card
Why: Picking a colour only changes the selected element.
Fix: Select the element again, pick the colour, then choose Current page or All pages in the Color panel to replace it throughout.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Canva Pro to make a greeting card?
No. The free plan covers templates, text, colour and photo editing, and downloads. Pro only matters if you want premium elements without paying for them one by one.
Which format should I download for printing?
PDF Print, with Crop marks and bleed ticked if the design runs to the edge of the card. Use PNG or JPG for cards sent digitally.
Can I change the bleed size for my print shop?
No. Canva fixes bleed at 0.125 inches per side. If your printer needs something different, ask them before ordering.
Can I reuse one design for several people?
Yes. Make a copy of the design and change the name, message and colours. Note that purchased premium elements are licensed per use, so a copy may need a new licence.

Screens and the thank-you card example come from the original walkthrough recording. The colour, bleed, crop mark and premium element behaviour were re-checked against Canva's Help Center in September 2026.
