Canva doesn't ship a built-in WhatsApp button, so if you've gone looking in Elements and come up empty, that's not you missing something. The simplest fix costs nothing and needs no third-party account: WhatsApp itself provides a click-to-chat link you can paste straight into any text or button element already in your Canva design.
A widget generator is also an option if you want a floating chat bubble instead of a single linked element, at the cost of an extra service. Either way, the setup takes a few minutes once you know where the pieces live.
Before you start
- A WhatsApp number that can receive messages, with its country code
- A Canva website already built and ready to publish
01Skip the widget: use WhatsApp's own click-to-chat link
WhatsApp provides a free click-to-chat link in the form wa.me/<number>. Use the full number in international format, digits only: no plus sign, no leading zero, no spaces or dashes.
A UK mobile like 07911 123456 becomes wa.me/447911123456. Add ?text=your+message to the end to pre-fill what the visitor sends.
That single URL covers everything in the linking steps below. The widget route further down is only worth the extra setup if you want a floating chat icon instead of one linked element.
02Or, if you want a floating bubble, build a widget instead
A click-to-chat link turns one element into a working button. A widget generator adds a chat icon that floats over every page and stays visible while visitors scroll, at the cost of a third-party account.
Elfsight's WhatsApp Chat builder is a free option for this: open its Connect panel and enter the WhatsApp number you want messages sent to, using the same country-code formatting as the link above. Content and Appearance tabs let you change the greeting text or button color before publishing the widget.
03Grab the shareable link, not the embed code
Once the widget is created, open its Share Link tab, not the Embed Code tab. Canva websites accept plain URLs on any clickable element but not raw HTML embeds, and Share Link is the tab that hands you a URL, not a snippet. Click Copy Link.
04Select the element and link it
Back in the Canva site, pick whatever visitors should click: a text box reading "Call Us" or "Chat With Us" works well, or a button element if the template has one. Select it, find the link icon in its toolbar, and paste in either URL from above, the wa.me link or the widget's Share Link.
Leave the display mode on Link so it opens like a normal outbound link, then click Done. No dedicated WhatsApp graphic is required; any existing text or shape can become the trigger.
05Preview and publish
Canva's editor doesn't make links clickable while you're still working in it; that only happens in Preview mode or on the published site. Click through in Preview to confirm it opens a WhatsApp chat pre-filled with the right number, then publish.
If you used the widget route, the number and greeting can be changed later from the widget dashboard without touching the Canva design. A wa.me link has to be edited and re-pasted directly if the number ever changes.
06Style it so it reads as a real call-to-action
A working link only helps if people notice it, so give the element real button styling, background fill, padding, and a short label like "Message Us on WhatsApp" instead of a plain line of text. Placing it near the header or above the fold means it competes for attention with the main content rather than hiding at the bottom of a long page, which matters most on mobile, where thumb reach and visibility drive click-through.
When it doesn't work
The linked element does nothing when clicked
Why: Links only work in Canva's Preview mode or on the published site, not in the regular editing view.
Fix: Switch to Preview, or publish the site, before testing the link.
WhatsApp opens with the wrong number, or won't open at all
Why: The number is missing its country code, still has a leading zero, or includes spaces, dashes, or a plus sign, all of which break wa.me's format.
Fix: Rebuild the link as wa.me/ followed by the country code and number with no other characters, per WhatsApp's own formatting rule.
The widget stops showing after a burst of traffic
Why: Elfsight's free tier caps combined widget views at 200 a month.
Fix: Check the view count on the widget dashboard and upgrade the widget plan, or switch that element to a plain wa.me link, which has no view cap.

Does Canva have a native WhatsApp button element?
