Udemy's payment options depend on where your account is registered and which device you're buying on. A learner in the US sees different choices at checkout from one in Brazil or India, and the iOS app goes through Apple's billing instead of Udemy's.
The only place to see exactly what's open to you is the Checkout page itself. This guide covers how to reach checkout, what each payment option involves, how Udemy credits and gifts fit in, and where saved cards are managed.
One point trips people up: you don't add a card from the Payment methods page. Cards are saved at checkout, and that page only controls and removes them.
01Go to the Checkout page
Click Buy now on a course page, or open the cart icon at the top right and click Checkout. The cart shows a badge with the number of courses waiting in it. The Checkout page is where Udemy lists the payment methods available to your account, so if you're wondering whether a particular option works where you live, this is the place to check.
02Pay by card, and save it if you want to
Choose the credit/debit card option and enter the card details. Type the name exactly as it's printed on the card ("John R.
Doe", not "John Doe"), with the security code and expiry as shown. To keep the card for next time, leave the box to save your card's information ticked before you click Complete Checkout. That checkbox is the only way to add a card to your Udemy account.
03Or pick PayPal or another option
PayPal is available in most countries and sends you to PayPal to approve the charge, so your card number never goes into Udemy's form. In the US you'll also see Apple Pay and Google Pay, plus Afterpay and Klarna on orders of $25 or more before tax.
Choosing one of those sends you to the provider's site, where first-time users sign up and give their own payment details. Regional methods such as Pix, Oxxo and UPI appear only for accounts in those countries (see the table above).
Some banks ask for an extra check such as 3D Secure or a confirmation in their mobile app. Complete it, or the payment won't go through.
04Use Udemy credits or a gift
There's no separate gift card box at checkout. Gifts on Udemy come in two forms.
A course gift enrolls you in one specific course: sign in, then click Unwrap Your Gift in the email, or enter the code (it contains the word GIFT) at udemy.com/gift/redeem or in the apply coupon field. A gift code for credits adds a balance to your account after you redeem it from the email link.
Credits apply automatically to your next course purchase on Udemy.com, and you can't hold them back for later. They don't work on the iOS app or for a Personal Plan subscription. You can check your balance and expiry date under Udemy credits in the profile menu.
05Manage saved cards from Payment methods
Hover over your profile picture and choose Payment methods from the menu, which sits below Account settings with Subscriptions, Udemy credits and Purchase history nearby.
06Choose whether saved cards appear at checkout
The page has one setting: "Show my saved payment methods on the checkout step". With it on, your saved card fills in automatically at checkout, and you can pick between cards if you've saved more than one.
With it off, checkout starts blank. Below the setting is your list of saved cards, each with a Remove link.
A new account shows "You don't have any saved payment method" until a card is saved during a purchase. The card paying for a Personal Plan subscription can't be removed here. Change it from the Subscriptions page instead.

From Udemy's Help Center, checked September 2026. Udemy says availability depends on device, location and account country, so treat the Checkout page as the final word.
When it doesn't work
Checkout says to complete the required fields, or rejects the card details
Why: The name, security code, expiry or postal code doesn't match what the bank has on file, or a saved card is out of date.
Fix: Delete the saved card and re-add it with the name exactly as printed. If your country doesn't use postal codes and the field still appears, Udemy suggests entering 00000.
Payment fails while you're on a VPN
Why: Udemy advises against VPNs at checkout; multiple IP addresses can cause authorisation failures.
Fix: Turn off the VPN and try again.
The payment failed but a charge shows on your card
Why: Usually a temporary authorisation hold, not a completed charge.
Fix: Udemy's help article on authorisation holds explains when they drop off. If the purchase shows as Pending, wait for it to finalise before paying again.
Every attempt fails with a Rocketmail account
Why: Udemy doesn't accept payments from accounts registered with a Rocketmail email address.
Fix: Change the account's email to another provider, then check out again.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay for Udemy with PayPal?
Yes, in most countries. Pick PayPal on the Checkout page and approve the payment on PayPal's site. If PayPal itself shows an error, Udemy directs you to PayPal Support.
Does Udemy sell gift cards?
There's no gift card field at checkout. You can gift a specific course, and some campaigns sell gift codes that turn into Udemy credits once redeemed. Credits then apply automatically to your next course purchase.
Can I pay in instalments?
In the US only, through Afterpay or Klarna, on orders of $25 USD or more before tax. Udemy documents the option for the Udemy.com Checkout page, not the mobile apps.
Why can't I use my credits in the iPhone app?
Purchases in the iOS app go through Apple's App Store billing, and Udemy credits can't be applied there. Buy on Udemy.com to use them.
How do I add a card without buying anything?
You can't. Udemy saves a card only when you tick the save box during a checkout. The Payment methods page lets you manage and remove saved cards but not add new ones.
