How to Join a Channel in Slack Easily 2026

The left sidebar shows a Channels section listing every room you've already joined, with an "Add channels" link underneath it for anything new. This is your home base for daily use, but it only shows channels you're already in — it won't surface public rooms you haven't joined yet, which is why finding new ones means going somewhere else in the app. Below Channels you'll also see Direct messages and any installed Apps, all sharing the same sidebar real estate.

Click Directories in the left sidebar, then select the Channels tab at the top — this is the actual full-workspace channel list, distinct from the short one in your sidebar. Each row shows the channel name, its member count, a short description, and whether you've already joined it. A banner at the top reminds you that channels are meant for organizing conversations by project, group, or topic, with a Create Channel button next to the search bar if none of the existing ones fit.

The dropdown above the list defaults to "All channels," which mixes ones you're in with ones you're not. Switch it to "Other channels" to see only the rooms you haven't joined yet, or "My channels" to double back and confirm what you're already a member of. On a workspace with dozens of channels this filter does the job the old keyword search used to — it narrows the list fast without you having to read every description.

Each row in the directory carries a one-line description set by whoever created the channel — read it before joining, since names alone can be ambiguous on a busy workspace. A channel marked "Required" means it's mandatory for everyone in the workspace and you likely can't leave it even if you wanted to; anything without that tag is optional. If a channel's purpose still isn't clear from its description, open it directly to skim recent messages before committing.

Click a channel's row (or its Join button, on rooms you haven't joined) to add it to your account. It appears back in your sidebar's Channels list immediately, and in most workspaces you can scroll back through its full message history from before you joined, not just new activity going forward. If your sidebar starts feeling cluttered after joining several, drag channels into custom sections to group them by project or team instead of leaving everything in one flat list.
