One way to link Canva and Google Drive starts on the Drive side, not in Canva's settings. Drive's Open with menu has a Connect more apps link into the Google Workspace Marketplace, and Canva is listed there as a free add-on.
Once it's installed, you can right-click an image in Drive and open it in Canva, or start a new design from Drive's New menu. One thing surprises people.
The design itself lives in your Canva account, and what lands in Drive is a shortcut to it. This guide covers the install, both ways of using it, and how to remove it.
01Open the Connect more apps link from any file
In Google Drive, right-click a file and hover over Open with. The submenu lists what can already open that file type (Preview, Open in new tab, Google Docs), then a Suggested apps section, then Connect more apps at the bottom. Click Connect more apps to open the Google Workspace Marketplace over Drive.
02Install Canva from the Marketplace
Search for Canva in the Marketplace window and click Install, then approve the permissions Google shows you. Canva asks for a lot: managing your Drive files, viewing and editing Calendar events, managing Gmail drafts, and reading your email address.
Read that list before you accept. A card then confirms "Canva has been installed".
The one install adds Canva to Docs, Sheets, Slides, Drive, Calendar and the Gmail sidebar, not just to Drive. Click Done.
On a work or school account, the install may be blocked. If your admin has switched off Drive access for third-party apps, only Marketplace apps the admin installed will work, so ask them to install Canva for you.
03Open an existing Drive image in Canva
Select an image already in Drive, such as a photo, logo or thumbnail. Right-click it, go to Open with, and Canva now sits in that list.
Choose it and the image opens in the Canva editor in a new tab, with no download-and-upload step. This doesn't edit the original file. Canva brings the image into a new design, and the .jpg or .png in Drive stays exactly as it was.
04Find the design shortcut in the same folder
Go back to the Drive folder. A new item with the design's name sits next to the source image, and its File size column shows a dash.
That's because it's a shortcut to the design in Canva, not a copy of the design's content. Opening it takes you to the design in Canva.
To start a blank design from Drive, click New, hover over More, and choose Canva. Google notes that files an app creates this way appear in My Drive, and not every Drive app can create files.
05Your designs still live in Canva
Anything started from Drive also appears in your Canva account, on the home dashboard and in your projects, like any other design. Edits you make in Canva are what the Drive shortcut points to, so there's nothing to sync by hand. If you want an actual file in Drive (a PNG or PDF, say), download or export it from Canva and save it there yourself.
06Disconnect it later if you need to
In Drive, click the Settings gear, then Settings > Manage apps. Find Canva, click Options, and choose Disconnect from Drive.
That removes it from Open with and New. To take it out of Gmail, Calendar and the Docs editors as well, uninstall it from the Marketplace. Designs already in your Canva account aren't deleted.
Frequently asked questions
Is connecting Google Drive to Canva free?
Yes. The Marketplace lists the Canva add-on as free of charge. What you can do inside the editor still depends on whether you're on Canva Free or a paid plan.
Does opening a Drive image in Canva change the original file?
No. Canva builds a new design from it and saves a shortcut to that design in Drive. The original image is untouched.
Why does the Canva file in Drive show no size?
Because it's a shortcut to a design that lives in your Canva account, not a stored file. Export from Canva if you need a real image or PDF in Drive.
What permissions does the add-on ask for?
Broad ones: managing Drive files, viewing and editing Calendar events, managing Gmail drafts, and your email address and basic profile. Google notes you can revoke an app's access at any time.
How do I remove it?
Drive Settings > Manage apps > Canva > Options > Disconnect from Drive removes it from Drive. Uninstall it from the Marketplace to remove it from Gmail, Calendar and the Docs editors too.

Canva's own help centre blocked automated access, so it isn't cited. The check corrected earlier wording that said edits in Canva flow back into the original Drive file; Drive stores a shortcut to the design, and the source image is left unchanged.
