Connecting Google Drive to Claude lets you ask questions about files already sitting in your Drive instead of opening each one yourself. The setup lives under Customize, not Settings, and it grants Claude more than read access: once connected, Claude can search your Drive, read what it finds, and create new files there too. This guide covers where the connector actually lives, what the Google sign-in screen asks you to approve, and the difference between turning the connector on for Claude to search on its own versus attaching one specific file to a chat.
Before you start
- A Google account with files already in Drive
- On Team or Enterprise plans, an Owner must add Google Drive to the workspace's connector list before it shows up for members
01Open Customize > Connectors
In claude.ai, go to Customize, the page that holds your connectors, skills, and plugins. This is not under Settings, despite that being the more obvious guess.
Find Google Drive in the list and select Connect. On Team and Enterprise plans, Google Drive won't appear here at all until an Owner has enabled it for the organization; each member then connects their own Google account separately.
02Sign in to Google and grant the requested permissions
Selecting Connect opens Google's own "Choose an account" screen. Pick the account whose Drive you want Claude to reach, or sign in first if you're not already authenticated in that browser.
Read what Google says Claude is requesting before continuing: the connector isn't read-only. Claude can search your Drive, read the files it finds, and create new files there, so this is a broader grant than a simple viewer permission.
03Turn the connector on inside a conversation
Connecting the account once doesn't make Drive searchable everywhere by default. In a chat, select the + at the lower left of the message box, choose Connectors, and turn on Google Drive for that conversation. Claude can then search your Drive on its own and will ask for your approval before it uses one of the connector's tools.
04Ask a question that needs your files, or attach one directly
With the connector on, ask something like "find the design brief for the onboarding project and summarize the open decisions." If you'd rather point Claude at one specific document instead of letting it search, use the same + menu and select Add from Google Drive, then search by name or paste the file's URL. That route works for Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides, and it re-reads the file's current content from Drive every time you send a message. Adding a Drive file to a project's knowledge, rather than a single chat, only works in a private project — the option is dimmed in a shared one.
05Reconnect or remove it later
Everything about the connector after setup lives back on the same Customize > Connectors page. Select Google Drive under Your connectors to Disconnect, Reconnect, or use the three-dot menu to Remove it entirely. If a reconnection error keeps recurring, disconnect, then connect and sign in to Google again rather than repeating the same reconnect attempt.

Very large files may come through incomplete regardless of type.
When it doesn't work
Claude can't find or use a file even though the connector is on
Why: The file is over Google's roughly 10 MB export cap for Docs, Sheets, and Slides, or it's a very large file whose content Claude receives incomplete.
Fix: Check the file's size, or attach it directly via + > Add from Google Drive and confirm Claude reports reading its content.
The Google Drive option is dimmed when adding files to a project
Why: Drive files can only be added to a project's knowledge in a private project, not a shared one.
Fix: Add the file to a private project, or use the connector inside an individual chat instead.
Google Drive doesn't show up in the connector list at all
Why: On Team and Enterprise plans, an Owner has to enable Google Drive for the whole workspace before it appears for individual members.
Fix: Ask an Owner or Primary Owner to add it under the organization's connector settings.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Google Drive connector read-only?
No. Claude can search your Drive, read the files it finds, and create new files there. It is a broader permission than a simple viewer grant, so it's worth reading the Google consent screen rather than clicking through it.
Where do I find the Google Drive connector in Claude?
