How to Add Watermark on Google Docs 2026
By Impran M N
Google Docs has a native watermark tool tucked a couple of menus deep, and once you find it, applying a repeating "Confidential" stamp or a company logo across every page takes under a minute. This guide shows exactly where the option lives — it moved recently, which is why some older tutorials point to the wrong menu — and walks through setting the text, tuning its transparency and orientation, and removing it later if you need to.
01Open Insert, then Page elements, then Watermark
From the top menu, click Insert, then hover Page elements — a submenu marked "Updated" opens with Table of contents, Header, Footer, Watermark, Page numbers, and Footnote. Watermark used to sit as its own top-level item in the Insert menu, so if you've used this feature before and can't find it, that's the change: it's now nested inside Page elements. Clicking Watermark opens a panel on the right side of the screen with Image and Text tabs at the top, which is where the rest of the setup happens.

02Type your text watermark
With the Text tab selected in the panel, type your watermark text into the field — something like "Draft," "Confidential," or a company name, up to 100 characters. As soon as you enter text, Google Docs renders it as large, light, repeating text diagonally across the page behind your document's content, and it updates live as you type so you can see the effect immediately rather than guessing and previewing. The watermark applies to the whole document automatically — there's no separate step to copy it onto every page.

03Adjust the font, transparency, and orientation
Below the text field, the Formatting section lets you change the font — the panel defaults to something like Arial but switching to a bolder face like Impact makes the watermark read more clearly at a glance, along with bold, italic, underline, and color controls. The Transparency slider is the setting most worth tuning: too opaque and the watermark competes with your actual text, too faint and it's pointless, so aim for something in the 50-70% range depending on how bold your font choice is. Underneath that, you can switch the watermark's orientation between Diagonal and Horizontal, which changes whether it runs across the page at an angle or sits flat.

04Use an image watermark instead of text
If you'd rather stamp a logo across the document than a line of text, click the Image tab at the top of the same panel instead of Text. That switches the panel to an upload control where you can pull in a file from your computer, Google Drive, or a URL, and the same transparency and placement controls apply to the image once it's in. This is the better option for branding a proposal or report with an actual company mark rather than a plain word.
05Remove or replace the watermark later
To take a watermark off, reopen Insert → Page elements → Watermark to bring the same panel back, then use the Remove watermark button at the bottom of it — there's no separate deletion step buried elsewhere in the document. Replacing one watermark with another works the same way: open the panel, clear or retype the text (or switch tabs to swap from text to image), and the change applies instantly across every page without needing to touch each one individually.
06When a watermark is worth adding
A light "Draft" or "Confidential" watermark is most useful on documents that are still being reviewed or that you don't want mistaken for a final version if they get forwarded, while a logo watermark suits polished reports or proposals going to a client. Keep transparency high enough that the watermark never fights with your text for attention — its job is to sit quietly in the background, not to be the first thing a reader notices.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use my own logo as a watermark in Google Docs?
Yes — open the Watermark panel from Insert → Page elements → Watermark, switch to the Image tab, and upload a logo from your computer, Google Drive, or a URL.
Does the watermark appear on every page automatically?
Yes, once applied it repeats across every page of the document automatically — there's no need to copy or reinsert it page by page.
Can I adjust how transparent the watermark looks?
Yes, the Watermark panel includes a transparency slider so you can lighten or darken it relative to your document's actual text.
How do I remove a watermark once it's added?
Reopen Insert → Page elements → Watermark and click Remove watermark at the bottom of the panel that opens.
I can't find Watermark under Insert — where did it go?
Google moved it into a submenu: click Insert, then hover Page elements, and Watermark is listed there alongside Header, Footer, and Page numbers.
