Gemini adds a small visible watermark to the images it generates. Most guides, including an earlier version of this one, jump straight to erasing it in a photo editor.
There's a simpler route now: Gemini has a Media Watermark setting that switches the visible mark off for images you generate afterwards. It's available to most users, with an exception in three countries covered below.
The visible mark is only one of three labels, though. Every Gemini image also carries an invisible SynthID watermark and Content Credentials metadata, and neither the setting nor any eraser tool changes those. This guide covers the setting first, a Canva fallback for images you've already made, and what you're allowed to do with the result.
01Know what you can remove and what you can't
The visible watermark is a courtesy label. SynthID is the one that matters for detection: Google embeds it invisibly in all media created or edited with Gemini Apps, and anyone can upload an image to Gemini and ask whether Google AI made it.
Hiding the visible mark doesn't change that answer. It also doesn't change what you're allowed to do.
Google's Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy bans misrepresenting generated content as made solely by a human in order to deceive. Removing the mark for a cleaner look is one thing.
Passing the image off as a photograph or hand-drawn work is another. This isn't legal advice. For commercial or client work, read the terms for your plan and any AI-disclosure rules where you publish (ad networks and social platforms set their own).
02Turn off Media Watermark, then generate and download
On a computer, go to gemini.google.com, click Settings at the bottom left, then Media Watermark, and turn it off. In the Android app, tap Menu, then Settings, and switch off Media Watermark.
The same setting covers images, video and music, and it applies only to Gemini Apps, not to AI features in other Google products. If you're in India, South Korea or Vietnam, you'll only see this setting with an AI Ultra subscription.
Everyone else there gets visible watermarks on all visual media automatically. With the setting off, generate the image.
Google describes the setting in terms of newly generated images, so an image you made while it was on may still carry the mark. The fastest fix is often to run the same prompt again.
Save the result with the download icon at the top right of the image, not a screenshot. A screenshot loses resolution and makes any later clean-up look rougher.
Keep your prompt with the file so you can regenerate it later. One thing about this example: the prompt asks for Tom and Jerry. Those characters belong to their rights holder, so an image like this isn't safe for commercial use with or without a watermark.
03For an older image, place it in Canva
If you can't regenerate (the prompt is lost, or you liked that exact result), Canva's Magic Eraser can paint the mark out. Start a new design, upload the downloaded image from Uploads, and drag it onto the canvas.
04Erase the mark with Magic Eraser, then check it
Click the image, click Edit in the toolbar, and under Tools select Magic Eraser. Choose Brush, set the brush size just large enough to cover the mark, paint over it and click Erase.
Click mode (select an object by clicking it) can work better on a mark sitting over a flat area. Canva suggests erasing a slightly larger area if something is left behind.
In Brush mode, zoom and undo/redo of brush strokes don't work, so if a pass goes wrong, use Reset Edits and start again. Then zoom in on the patch. Busy backgrounds like this kitchen hide the fill well; flat colour shows smudges and seams, which matter more if the image is going to print.

When it doesn't work
There's no Media Watermark option in Gemini's settings
Why: You're in India, South Korea or Vietnam without an AI Ultra subscription, or you're looking in a different Google product. The setting exists only in Gemini Apps (web and mobile).
Fix: Check at gemini.google.com under Settings. If you're in one of those three countries, the setting needs AI Ultra.
The watermark is still there after turning the setting off
Why: The image was generated before you changed the setting. Google describes the setting in terms of newly generated images.
Fix: Run the prompt again with the setting off, or use the Canva fallback.
Undo does nothing while erasing in Canva
Why: In Magic Eraser's Brush mode, undo and redo of brush strokes aren't supported.
Fix: Click Reset Edits and repaint, using a smaller brush.
Frequently asked questions
Can I stop Gemini from adding a watermark?
The visible one, yes. Turn off Settings > Media Watermark in Gemini Apps. In India, South Korea and Vietnam this needs an AI Ultra subscription. The invisible SynthID watermark can't be turned off.
Does removing the visible watermark hide that the image is AI-generated?
No. SynthID and Content Credentials stay with the image, and Gemini's verification tool can still identify it as made by Google AI.
Is it allowed to remove the watermark?
Google gives you a setting to turn the visible mark off, so hiding it isn't the issue. What Google's Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy forbids is claiming generated content was made solely by a human in order to deceive. Check your plan's terms and any disclosure rules where you publish.
Can I use a watermark-free Gemini image commercially?
The watermark doesn't decide that. Your plan's terms and the image's content do. An image showing someone else's characters or brand carries those rights problems whatever the watermark status.

That check found Gemini's own Media Watermark setting, which this guide previously didn't mention, and the India/South Korea/Vietnam AI Ultra restriction on it. It also corrected the earlier claim that Magic Eraser is on Canva's free tier (the walkthrough used an Education account, and Canva's docs don't confirm free access) and the advice to undo strokes, which Brush mode doesn't support.
