AI Chats gives a shortcut into ClickUp's built-in assistant, and Channels and Direct Messages handle team chat without leaving the app. Spaces is the section that matters most for structure: a starter workspace might already show All Tasks, a general Team Space, a dedicated WEDDING space, and a Project Management space, which shows how loosely or tightly each one can be scoped.

Spend the first few minutes here before creating anything. Knowing where Spaces, Channels, and personal task views live saves backtracking later.

Inside a Space, the Board view lays out status columns left to right: To Do, Planning, In Progress, At Risk, Update Required, and On Hold in a typical setup. A task card such as "Design Home Page Layout" carries an assignee avatar, a date range, and a priority flag marked High, all visible without opening the task.

Every column has its own "+ Add Task" control, so moving work through stages is just dragging a card or creating one directly where it belongs. This board view is where day-to-day project management happens. It gets more daily use than any dashboard or list.

ClickUp Docs live in the same workspace as the tasks they describe, organized as Pages that can nest. A "Project Notes" doc might hold separate pages for Project 1 and Project 2, each editable inline with a title, a "Start writing" prompt, and quick-insert options for a blank wiki, a table, a column layout, or an embedded ClickUp List.

A doc can link straight into a task, and a task can link straight into a doc, so requirements and meeting notes don't have to live in a separate app. For a beginner, the habit worth building early is writing the plan in a Doc before creating tasks from it, not the other way around.

Collaboration runs through two channels at once. Assigned Comments surfaces every comment where a user has been tagged across all tasks, so nothing gets buried in a thread they aren't watching.

Channels behaves like team chat scoped to a Space or a topic, such as a General channel tied to the workspace, and Direct Messages sit next to it for one-on-one conversations that don't need to be public. Because comments live on the task itself, the context of a conversation (what task, what status, what deadline) doesn't get lost the way it can in a general-purpose chat app.

The AI section of the sidebar splits into Ask or Create, Super Agents, and a Connections panel showing usage. ClickUp's own help documentation describes the free Brain AI allowance as a lifetime limit, not a monthly one: Free Forever workspaces get 25 AI uses, or 50 in workspaces with more than 10 members, and that allowance never resets.

Separate from it, AI Super Credits power automated features including Super Agents, but buying credits needs a paid plan. A trial workspace showing both a use count and a credit balance is most likely running on a paid trial, not the Free Forever tier.

Super Agents is also a recent addition: ClickUp rolled it out in February 2026, so it may not appear in every account yet depending on plan and when the workspace was created. Under Super Agents, the panel offers Create Agent, All Agents, My Agents, and Activity. For a beginner, running an existing agent on a real task teaches more, faster, than building a custom one from a blank spec.

ClickUp's value multiplies once it connects to the tools already in use. Integrations with Slack and Google Drive let notifications, files, and updates flow in without manual copying.

Instead of connecting everything on day one, pick the integration that fixes the biggest current annoyance, usually duplicate notifications, and set that up first. More integrations can wait until the core workspace, Spaces, a Board, a Doc, and comment habits, is already working well.
