How to Integrate Asana With Jira

Before installing anything, it helps to see the shape of both tools. Asana's Home and Inbox are where business-side users track their own tasks and notifications — overdue items, due-today items, and activity grouped by date.

On the Jira side, work lives in Spaces (in newer Jira Cloud instances, alongside classic projects) with items like epics, stories, and tasks carrying their own keys such as TS-8 or POS-3. The integration's whole job is to let someone living in the Asana view above see and act on what's happening in a Jira space like the one below, without needing a Jira login.

A typical Jira space, like a Scrum backlog, organizes work into an active sprint and a backlog underneath it, with each item showing a status (To Do, In Progress, In Review), a due date, story points, and an assignee avatar. This is the granular, engineering-facing view the integration reaches into — when someone in Asana wants an update on "Design Packaging" or "Monitor KPI," the Jira Cloud app is what pulls that status back into their Asana task instead of them opening Jira directly.

Inside an Asana project, open Browse apps and search for Jira Cloud. The listing is developed by Asana itself, and the About the app section explains the split clearly: business teams get real-time Jira updates without leaving Asana, and engineering teams keep working in Jira while their changes surface automatically on the linked Asana task, including the ability to create a new Jira issue directly from Asana. A preview screenshot in the listing shows the integration in practice — a Jira issue card embedded inline in an Asana task's activity feed, complete with status, assignee, and priority.

The same listing is upfront that some capabilities sit behind an Upgrade to Starter prompt. Automation-style Rules — for example, moving a task to a new section automatically creating a Jira issue, or a single-select field change triggering a new issue — are gated features you'll need a paid Asana tier to unlock. On a free workspace you can still install the app and view linked Jira context, but the automatic issue-creation rules won't be available until you upgrade, which is worth checking before you promise a team a fully automated workflow.

The same install screen lists exactly what Jira Cloud can do on your behalf once connected: access your name and email address, access your tasks, projects, and workspaces, create and modify tasks and comments, and display external Jira data on your Asana tasks — visible to anyone who already has access to those tasks. That last point matters for anything containing sensitive information, since linking a Jira issue to a shared Asana task makes that Jira context visible to every collaborator on the task, not just you.

With the app installed, open an Asana task, find the Jira Cloud option in the task's app row, and either link it to an existing Jira issue or create a new one from inside Asana. Test with something low-stakes first — link one task, change its status in Jira, and confirm the update appears back on the Asana side within a few minutes. Once you've confirmed a two-way update actually lands, it's safe to roll the app out to the rest of the projects that need it.
