How to Remove Unwanted Bank Accounts From QuickBooks Online Easily 2026

By Impran M N

Closing out an old checking account or credit card in QuickBooks Online involves two separate steps: disconnecting the live feed, then making the account inactive in your Chart of Accounts. This guide walks through both, so your dashboard stays clean while your historical records remain fully intact. It's for business owners tidying up their books after discontinuing a card or account.

01Open the Bank Transactions dashboard

Go to Transactions, then Bank Transactions, to see your connected live bank feeds.

02Disconnect the live feed

Click the pencil edit icon on the unwanted account card, select Edit Account Info, check Disconnect this account on save, and save.

03Navigate to Chart of Accounts

Go back to Transactions and open Chart of Accounts to find the account's ledger entry.

04Make the account inactive

Find the account row, click the dropdown arrow in the Action column, and select Make Inactive to confirm the closure.

05Verify it's hidden from your list

Click the filter gear icon above the accounts list and uncheck Include Inactive to confirm the account no longer clutters your view.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Will making an account inactive delete my historical data?

No, all past transactions and reports tied to the account are preserved even after it's marked inactive.

Do I need to disconnect the feed before making the account inactive?

Yes, disconnecting the live sync first prevents QuickBooks from continuing to pull in new transactions for an account you're closing.

Can I reactivate the account later if I need to?

Yes, inactive accounts can be reactivated at any time from the same filter menu in Chart of Accounts.

What happens to a leftover balance on the account?

You may need to zero out or transfer any residual balance before the deactivation is fully clean, especially if the account still shows an open amount.
