When Chrome's page slides off to one side or loses a strip at the edge, the cause is almost always one of four things: a display setting outside Chrome, a zoom level Chrome saved for that site, an extension changing the layout, or a rendering glitch tied to graphics acceleration. Each has a different fix, so work through them in order from cheapest to most disruptive.
The last resort, Reset settings, does more than most guides admit. It also clears cookies and site data, so you'll be signed out of websites afterwards. The details are in step 5.
01Check whether the problem is Chrome at all
Look at your other apps. If every window, or the desktop itself, is offset, the problem sits in your operating system's display scaling or resolution, or in the monitor's own position settings.
Chrome can't fix that. If only Chrome looks wrong, drag its window to another monitor if you have one, then maximise it.
A window left partly off-screen can pass for a shifted page. Press F11 (Cmd+Ctrl+F on Mac) to toggle full screen and see whether the layout snaps back.
02Reset the zoom, including zoom saved for individual sites
Press Ctrl+0 (Cmd+0 on Mac) to return the current page to its default zoom. Chrome remembers zoom per site, so a page that's shifted or cropped on one website but fine on others is usually a saved zoom level.
To check the global default, open Settings from the three-dot menu, choose Appearance and look at Page zoom. To clear saved zoom for specific sites, go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > Zoom levels and click the X next to each domain.
03Test without extensions
Open the same page in an Incognito window. Extensions don't run there unless you've allowed them to, so if the page looks normal in Incognito, an extension is the likely culprit.
Extensions that resize windows, inject styles or manage tab layouts are the usual suspects. Go to chrome://extensions and turn extensions off one at a time, reloading the page after each. Disabling everything at once fixes the symptom but leaves you guessing which one caused it.
04Turn graphics acceleration off and on
If the shift looks like a rendering glitch (flicker, a strip of the page drawn in the wrong place, or content jumping when you scroll), open Settings > System and switch Use graphics acceleration when available off. Relaunch Chrome and check the page. If nothing changes, switch it back on, since leaving it off can make video playback heavier.
05Reset Chrome's settings if the shift persists
Open Settings, choose Reset settings, then Restore settings to their original defaults, and confirm with Reset settings. According to Google, this resets your default search engine, homepage and tabs, the new tab page, pinned tabs, content settings, cookies and site data, and extensions and themes.
Bookmarks and passwords aren't touched. Two things to know first.
Clearing cookies signs you out of most websites. And if you're signed in to Chrome, the reset applies across your signed-in devices. Google also says it isn't a full reset: fonts and accessibility settings are left alone.
06Try a fresh Chrome profile
If the shift survives a reset, click your profile icon at the top right and add a new profile. If pages look normal there, the problem lives in your old profile's data. The practical fix is to move your bookmarks and passwords to the new profile and stop troubleshooting the old one.
Frequently asked questions
Why is only one website shifted or cut off in Chrome?
Chrome saves zoom per site. Press Ctrl+0 (Cmd+0 on Mac) on that site, or clear its entry under Settings > Privacy and security > Site settings > Additional content settings > Zoom levels.
Will resetting Chrome delete my bookmarks or passwords?
No. Google states bookmarks and passwords aren't deleted or changed. The reset does clear cookies and site data, disable extensions and reset themes, so expect to sign back in to websites.
Do these fixes work on both Windows and Mac?
Yes. The Settings paths are the same. Only the shortcuts differ: Ctrl+0 and F11 on Windows, Cmd+0 and Cmd+Ctrl+F on Mac.
Do I need to restart Chrome after changing these settings?
Zoom and extension changes apply immediately. The graphics acceleration toggle needs a relaunch, which Chrome offers when you switch it.
